Butchers Object To Being Repeatedly Compared To TerroristsOctober 12th, 2001
SAN ANTONIO -- "These are not men," said Hardball host Chris Matthews of the terrorists behind the recent attacks on the United States, "They are butchers." Exactly the kind of comment that makes Waynne DeLane, a butcher from San Antonio, Texas, fuming.
"Terrorists are inhuman monsters who massacre civilians to strike fear into an enemy," said DeLane. "I don't see how you can compare that to humble worker in an admittedly foul occupation meant for preparing food for human beings." "We aren't even involved in the slaughter process of animals -- which by the way, are animals." Butchers, also known as meat cutters, are food workers who prepare meat intended for human consumption for market. "Did you know that over three hundred customary cuts of meat can be made from a single cow's body?" said DeLane, wiping his sweaty brow on his blood-stained apron, "I'd like to see a terrorist do that." Butchers must undergo extensive training before being certified to be able to work. "I'ts not all slicing up bloody flesh," said Anthony Markus, a food worker in Chicago. "We also learn how to set up a counter display, merchandising and salesmanship, and how to answer customer questions concerning meat preparation and cooking." |
