WASHINGTON, DC -- Under a
series of new INS regulations, the Department of Justice will record the email addresses of new immigrants and will periodically send them news and special offers that they might be interested in.
Officials denied calling it a "spam list". "We are providing a valuable service to new immigrants," said Attorney General John Ashcroft. "By sharing their email address with DOJ partner merchants, they will receive special discounts and valuable information about the products and services they demand."
The addresses will be stored in a joint FBI-CIA database, along with other new kinds of data.
