Dear Mr. WhitemoreMarch 3rd, 2002
It is always a pleasure to reach correspondence with a member of our community. As a leader in the great state of Texas, I find that communication with constituents of our state is important in any successful governorship. I, and I am sure you do as well, believe in the importance of traditional values, compassion, conservatism and a strong criminal justice system.
Justice is a pivotal aspect of our society; without which our democracy and way of life would not be possible. But it is equally important that justice be carried out in the interest of the people it serves. A fair trial is important the first time and after that we must limit the burden of the taxpaying citizens like you and me. That is why at this time I am unable to grant your request. We can’t all have the most attentive legal counsel, or the most knowledgeable judicial staff. It may be true that your lawyer was drunk, but clemency should only be granted in the most extreme of cases, which I have yet to see in my term of office Fortunately, you will not die in vain. Your execution will serve as a deterrent to those who would consider similar misdeeds in the future. I hope you understand the necessity of the situation. I have put in a good word with your warden and I trust you will have a comfortable experience for the remainder of your stay. |
