Pentagon Cites Vague Success Against Vague Enemy April 28th, 2004
WASHINGTON, DC -- "We have clearly turned them back in an unclear, undefinable way," said Pentagon spokesperson Lt. Col. Gary Keck, of the new offensive in Iraq this week calling for heavy artillery and air support against something. "We're certainly shooting at things a lot, at whom or what I couldn't really say, but it ought to hit that damn pretty hard," said 1st Sgt. Gabriel Adams, on the ground in Iraq.
Some analysts question the logic of the battle. "We have absolutely no idea who we are fighting or why we are fighting them," said researcher Jamie Cogan of the Rockford Policy Institute. "It's impossible to measure success in such a situation." The Pentagon disagrees. Said Lt. Col. Keck: "We are really much closer to success, whatever exactly it is that 'success' constitutes."
