Iraqi President to Spend Rest of Term Inside Popemobile June 24th, 2004
BAGDAD -- New Iraqi President Iya Allawi will spend the entirety of his term in office in a bullet-proof protective glass bubble created by Mercedes for the pope, coalition authorities said today.
The reinforced glass-enclosed vehicle will be used to ensure maximum security for the incoming leader. "He'll be legislating in it, eating in it, sleeping in it," said Coalition Provisional Authority Director Paul Bremer. "It will be both his living room and his dining room."
"Like the rest of Iraq, he will be free to pursue his interests in heavily fortified seclusion," said an Iraq expert familiar with the situation.
