WASHINGTON, DC -- Several Republican lawmakers said today they will refuse to flee to Mexico with the rest of the party's elected officials. Most of the as-yet un-indicted Republicans in Washington made a break for the Mexican border on Monday morning.
"No matter how many of us are indicted or arrested, I promised to my constituents that I would remain in office for at least the few weeks before I, too, will be forced to step down," said Rep. James Hearken (R-PA) in a statement read to reporters on Monday. Few of his colleagues apparently shared his idealism, as his words echoed across a nearly empty House chamber.
This afternoon Rep. Randy Cunningham (R-CA)
joined the ranks of Republicans forced to step down in the face corruption charges, as
prosecutors announced a broadening of the Abramoff wire fraud scandal that could include more administration and congressional officials.
