WASHINGTON, DC -- Interior Secretary Gale Norton
resigned this afternoon. In a letter to President Bush, she said she looked forward to spending more time clearing forests and drilling for oil and gas with her family.
The first woman to hold that office, she turns 52 tomorrow. In her private life she hopes to find "overgrown" forests and harvest them for timber, she said in an email.
"There is always more work to be done," she said. "I'm always excited about permitting mining operations, and look forward to doing so with my family."
